As the price of crude oil falls and the mining boom slows, Australia is turning towards the CSG industry to ensure the country’s economy remains strong. Luckily, with the benchmark Brent Oil price forecast projecting a 2017-18 gas revenue of AU$51.6bln, Australia’s Coal Seam Gas (CSG) and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) industry is set to boom.
In light of this future boom, CSG is being paid more attention – placing an increased focus on the way energy companies extract, process and produce the gas. The reason these procedures are placed under the spotlight is due to the issues that can emerge at various stages of CSG development, including; blowouts during well drilling and construction, ignition and spills during production and offsite factors such as traffic and truck movements.
Therefore in order to reduce the risk of CSG related issues as well as echoing an industry-wide drive to minimise costs, ensuring that all operations equipment can operate in the most efficient, productive and environmentally sustainable way possible is crucial.
As pipelines are the arteries of CSG wells and process systems, poor pipe quality, joining and maintenance can have long-ranging impacts on all the downstream processes of CSG operations, with inefficient maintenance creating further downtimes and eating away at operator’s bottom lines. In particular, transfer points are vital as they can be placed under extreme pressure from the gas as it is extracted.
Misalignment menacing productivity
Pipework misalignment is a common post- work over occurrence that occurs due to the well head being removed and refitted. Higher pressures can also cause piping fatigue that can turn into catastrophic failures such as in-service leaks and ruptures – a major risk to groundwater supplies.
As well as placing heavy pressures on pipework, misalignments can be compounded by ground settlement as the gas is extracted from the wells, causing depressurisation of the seam and the pipes which may result in backflow or leaks.
The ability to handle high pressures and deal with misalignments in a dynamic environment ensures safer, more environmentally sustainable transfer of gas while also cutting maintenance downtimes, allowing for more production uptimes.
A stainless steel braided hose solution
Radcoflex Australia Pty Ltd (Radcoflex) manufacture specifically engineered stainless steel braided hoses of the highest quality that are capable of handling misalignments, and can be fitted with a variety of end connections to suit almost any application.
Radcoflex’s stainless steel braided assemblies can be constructed specifically for the transfer of coal seam gas and process water from well heads to skid, and from the skid to the gathering system. They are currently handling up to Class 600 working pressure and 200mm of misalignment in the field.
